Commentary:
The document is the defense by Miguel Marcó del Pont against the Peruvian Viceroyalty’s accusation that the "Fragata Hunter" had violated the Spanish commercial trade route from Montevideo to Valparaíso. The Spanish "Fragata Cantabria" detained the Hunter in near Valparaíso. The Hunter had a license, authorized by the English, the French and by Captain General of Montevideo, to carry goods to Valparaíso from Montevideo, since Buenos Aires was closed to commerce for its insurrection against the Spanish. The authorities of England, France and Montevideo are charged responsible for the actions. Description created by Margarita Hernandez.
This manuscript documents the increasing loss of Spanish commercial control within Latin America to the French and English. While this particular case occurred after much of Latin America had declared independence from Spain, it represents Spain’s efforts to hold onto the commercial control that they enjoyed throughout the colonial period.
