Commentary:
Mitre’s (1821-1906) public opposition to Rosas led to his exile in Chile, Bolivia, and Peru. (Note Reyes’ condemnation of him in the pamphlet Clamor y Protesta.) He returned to Argentina for the battle of Caseros in 1852, where Rosas was defeated. He served as president of Argentina from 1862-1868. Mitre founded Argentina’s major newspaper La Nación in 1870 and wrote several historical works, including this book on the wars of independence in northwestern Argentina.
