Commentary:
Francis Bond Head, a member of the British Corps of Engineers, was the head of the Río de la Plata Mining Company. When it failed in the early 1820s, Head rode across the pampas and the Andes, reportedly covering up to sixty miles a day. His account of this expedition remains one of the best descriptions of the region by a foreign traveler.
On the page shown here, Head describes a gaucho who is returning from a lion hunt with his pack of dogs.
