G. K. Chesterton Collection

Bookplate from John Bennett Shaw's G. K. Chesterton Collection.

The collection includes approximately 1500 books and periodicals, which are comprised of the many different editions of Chesterton's works, among them many first editions; translations of Chesterton into other languages; runs of such serials with which Chesterton was associated as: The New Witness and G. K.'s Weekly; and many other items. Search for these titles by specifying the location as "Special Collections" in the ND Catalog or the Catalog Classic.

The collection also includes manuscripts, letters, photographs, drawings, and articles by Chesterton as well as articles about him. Consult the finding aid.

The bulk of the G. K. Chesterton collection was acquired in 1965 from Notre Dame alumnus, John Bennett Shaw ('37). Shaw was a bibliophile who had collecting interests in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Eric Gill, and many other areas. The image on the right depicts Shaw's personal G. K. Chesterton bookplate.

Since the acquisition of the collection in 1965, other items have been added to Shaw's collection.
